The block of Dirt is a block forming the shallow undergrounds.

Dirt is found just below grass on almost all surfaces of the world, except for those covered by sand. Dirt is usually 4 blocks deep and begins immediately under the one block layer of grass.
Grass will be converted to dirt when using either the Wheat Farmer, Flax Farmer, Alkanet Farmer, Hollyhock Farmer or Wolfsbane Farmer tools.
